Day Surgery Patient Information

e.g. Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, Bone Marrow Biopsy

Pre-Operative Telephone Call

One or two days prior to your procedure you will receive a telephone call from our nursing staff.

The nurse will advise the following:

  • Preparation
  • Your arrival time /Your fasting times
  • The length of time you can expect to be at the day hospital
  • Your post-operative care

You will need to have a responsible adult collect you from the hospital and stay with you overnight.

This is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you have about your admission and the post-operative care that you will need.  

This call will take approximately 10 minutes.

On the Day of your Procedure

Shower or bath at home – you may use deodorant, but do not use talcum powder, face creams, makeup, perfumes or after shave.

You may wear your wedding ring but leave all other jewellery at home.

Wear comfortable clothing.

It is important to continue all your normal medications unless you have been instructed otherwise and bring all medications in original containers with you.

If you have diabetes or are taking blood thinning medication, speak with your doctor or anaesthetist.

On Your Arrival at the Day Hospital

Park in the area out the front of the building, go to reception. 

Our reception staff will confirm your details and accept payment. 

Our nursing staff will prepare you for your procedure.

The Anaesthetic

You may be asked to sign a consent form for the anaesthetic.

During your procedure you will be monitored by the anaesthetist.

Your Procedure

The procedure will be performed under General Anaesthetic, Intravenous Sedation or Local Anaesthetic.

In the operating theatre you may be aware of noises from the equipment, or the voices of the staff and you may see nurses setting up sterile equipment.

Recovery

After your procedure you will be moved to a comfortable recliner chair and your health is monitored by the recovery nurse.  

You will be given light refreshments.

When you are ready you will be given discharge instructions and discharged home accompanied by a responsible adult.

When You Go Home

Allow yourself time to recover and rest during the first 24 hours.

Things to avoid:

Driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery

  • Signing important documents
  • Drinking alcohol and smoking
  • Any strenuous activity
  • Looking after small children

A responsible adult should drive and collect you from the hospital.

A responsible adult should stay with you overnight in case of an emergency.

Day Therapy Patient Information

e.g. Infusions – Iron, Blood, IVIg, Intravitreal (eye) injections

Pre-Admission Telephone Call

One or two days prior to your procedure you will receive a telephone call from our nursing staff.

They will advise the following:

  • The length of time you can expect to be at the hospital
  • Preparation
  • Transport and parking arrangements
  • Your arrival time

Day of your Procedure

  • Eat and drink normally unless advised not to do so by the doctor.
  • Someone may stay with you during the infusion.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Bring entertainment with you such as a book, laptop, etc.
  • Continue to take usual medications unless you have been advised by the doctor not to do so.
  • Bring medications with you in the original containers.

On Arrival

Parking is available at the front of the building.

Present at reception.

Staff will confirm your details and accept any payments.

A nurse will collect you from reception and take you to Day Therapy.

The nursing staff will prepare you for your procedure.

Your Procedure

A nurse or healthcare provider will insert a cannula into a vein in your arm.

The medication will be infused over a prescribed period.

The length of time depends on the medication and your specific condition.

You may need to stay for a period after the medication has been completed.

The nurse will inform you of the expected discharge time.

You will be provided with verbal and written information about your medication and the possible side effects.

Online Admission Form

Your doctor will inform you of the day of your hospital admission as well as notifying the hospital of the date of your procedure.

Your doctor will explain your procedure or operation to you and complete your consent form with you.

It is important that you have seen your GP within the last year before your proposed surgery date.

Prior to you coming into hospital, you are required to register your admission to confirm your personal details, health history, financial details and other arrangements.

Payment Information

It’s important to check the following with your health fund prior to your admission:

  • Identify whether your level of health fund cover adequately covers the cost of your procedure and hospital accommodation.
  • Identify whether an excess is payable, and if so, the amount.
  • If you have been a member of your health fund for less than 12 months, your fund may not accept liability for the costs of your admission if your condition pre-dated joining your health fund. In these cases, your health fund has the right to obtain details regarding these symptoms from your GP or specialist consultant.
  • If you are a member of a health fund, the hospital will conduct an eligibility check to establish your level of cover and any payable excesses. It is the patient’s responsibility to disclose health fund details to us.
  • Prostheses (artificial surgical items used during procedures such as intraocular lenses or viscoelastic fluids) are fully covered by your health fund.
  • Your Doctor and Anaesthetist will also advise you of their fees for your surgery.
  • If your account is subject to a Work Cover or Third-Party claim, please forward to us the full details of your claim, including a letter from the insurance company accepting liability for your admission.

For patients without health insurance – the day hospital offers competitive hospital fee packages for uninsured patients undergoing procedures. Depending on procedure, please check with day hospital administration for further enquiries.

Privacy

With the amendment to the Privacy Act on 21st December 2001 (the National Privacy Principles for health service providers in the private sector), we are obliged to protect the privacy of your personal information collected and held at the facility such as:

  • Name, address and telephone numbers
  • Date of birth
  • General Practitioner and referring doctor information
  • Medical history

Any data we are required by legislation to pass on to specific statistical bodies will be done without patient identification, including patient satisfaction surveys.

All personal information pertaining to patients is held electronically via our own onsite secure server. This information is only accessible to staff members who need it to perform their duties in the Day Hospital.

Medical records stored as electronic data is password protected and is only accessible by staff members involved in the patient’s treatment and care.

In all cases, the medical record is the property of the facility, not the patient or the doctor. You may be granted access to your medical record by the directors. The medical records, in whole or part, must not leave the facility, other than on Court order.

Safety and Quality

Our day hospital is accredited for the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards and ISO9001:2015 with Certification Partner Global FZ LLC. We collect, submit and evaluate data for Day Surgery and Infection Control Clinical Indicators. Review of our data demonstrates excellent results consistent with high standards of patient safety and clinical outcomes.

We conduct quality assurance audits to measure the outcomes of clinical and business functions within the Day Hospital and to ensure compliance against policies, procedures, standards and regulations. The outcomes of these audits are evaluated by staff, doctors, consumer representatives and management to improve patient care, service delivery and quality improvement.

Improved healthcare hand hygiene is the highest priority area in Australia to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Wide Bay Private Day Hospital hand hygiene program has been developed to ensure that all staff and Credentialled Medical Practitioners are educated in the 5 moments for hand hygiene and comply with current hand hygiene practices.

Regular compliance audits are carried out and the results reviewed as part of our quality improvement processes and provided to the National Hand Hygiene Initiative for comparison to the national rate.

Consumer Participation

Consumer Participation is of utmost importance for improving the patient journey and experience.

What is a Consumer Representative?

A patient and consumer representative is someone who:

  • Wants to help improve the quality of our Day Hospital’s care for all patients and family members
  • Gives feedback to the day hospital based on his or her own experiences
  • Helps us plan changes to improve how we take care of patients
  • Volunteers his or her time

Patient and consumer advisors provide a voice that represents all patients and families of patients who receive care at Wide Bay Private Day Hospital.

They partner with Day Hospital doctors, nurses, and administrators to help improve the quality of our centre’s care for all patients and family members.

What do consumer representatives do?

  • Provide input and evaluation of the safe and effective delivery of care and services
  • Participate in discussion groups 
  • Review or help create educational or informational materials
