Wide Bay Private Day Hospital (WBPDH) was established in 2023 and is a modern purpose-built day hospital with 2 Operating Theatres and 6 Day Infusion Therapy Chairs.
Equipped with the latest technology, surgical equipment and instrumentation, our hospital has been designed to provide the best possible environment for the procedures we undertake including endoscopy, minor operations, day infusion therapy and more.
We are a fully accredited facility, focused on providing individual healthcare and believe in treating our patients and their families with compassion and respect.
Because we are a day hospital, all patients admitted for procedures are discharged the same day, usually within 4 to 6 hours.
As we do fewer surgeries compared to larger hospitals, patients enjoy the benefit of more personalised care at very competitive rates.

Learn about the history of the Wide Bay Private Day Hospital
Bundaberg Cancer Centre Opened
In 2012, the Australian federal government funded the development of a cancer care centre in Bundaberg at 125 Woongarra Street. The building opened in January 2014 by the then federal health Minister, Peter Dutton. Two radiotherapy bunkers and 6 chemotherapy chairs facilitated radiotherapy and chemotherapy services. The owners of the facility formed a contract with Wide Bay Hospital & Health Services to provide services to public patients. The facility owners then sold the business (but not the building) to Icon Cancer Care who assumed responsibility for delivering the contract with Bundaberg Hospital, fulfilling the funding obligations of the federal health department, and paying rent to the facility owners. At the expiry of the contract with Bundaberg Hospital in 2018, the contract was not renewed but rather given to Genesis Cancer Care who built a new facility offering radiotherapy services in the grounds of Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg. Fifteen of the Icon Cancer Care staff moved into the Genesis facility and the Icon Cancer Care Centre became redundant and closed. Upon learning of this the Strahan family undertook complex negotiations with Icon Cancer Care, the facility owners, and the federal Department of Aged Care to buy the facility and assume the obligations of the federal grant to continue providing specialist medical services.
Strahan Family Background
The hospital is owned/operated by five members of the Strahan family including Dr Martin Strahan, Consultant Physician, Jeanne Strahan, Perinatal Psychologist, and their three sons - Luke Strahan, Accountant, Dr Stephen Strahan, Urologist, and Dr Andrew Strahan, Urologist. The Strahan family moved to Bundaberg in 1993 when the three Strahan boys commenced attending Bundaberg State High School. Dr Martin Strahan was appointed Director of Medicine/ICU at Bundaberg Hospital and commenced private practice at Friendly Society Private Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg. The Bundaberg Specialist Centre in Woondooma Street was built by the Strahan family and opened in 2000. This development enabled the recruitment of many overseas specialist physicians to Bundaberg. In September 2020, Bundaberg Specialist Centre was sold to Friendly Society Private Hospital and the medical practice moved to a newly purchased building (the Cancer Care Centre) at 125 Woongarra Street.
Conversion to a Modern Hospital
After assuming occupancy in September 2020, the facility continued to function as a specialist medical centre for three years while undergoing extensive renovations. The 1,200 m2 cancer care centre was converted into a modern day hospital with 9 consulting rooms, 6 day therapy chairs, and 2 operating theatres. The hospital operates a central sterilising service supporting the hospital theatres and other medical centres in Bundaberg. The hospital also has an in-house laundry. The hospital provides endoscopy, minor general surgery, ophthalmology, gynaecology and IVF, iron and blood transfusions, and chemotherapy services. Further clinical services will be integrated into the service offering as become available.
Wide Bay Private Day Hospital Opens
Wide Bay Private Day Hospital was licensed to operate by Queensland Health in October 2023. A formal opening was conducted in December 2023 by the Honourable Keith Pitt, federal MP.
